This July 18-25, 2010, world renowned poi instructor and
fire performer, Zan Moore of the Instruments Of The Now, will host a
special poi workshop in association with La Escuela Del Sol!
Zan is the creator and teacher of "The
Encyclo-Poi-dia" DVDs, and has the most watched Poi video on the internet
(521,000 and counting!). He's taught workshops throughout the United
States and beyond to poi players of all levels. His performances have
taken him to 20 countries so far.
The poi retreat will include 6 nights of accommodation at a
private resort, 2 hours of instructional poi every morning and 2 hours of
practice time and personal instruction every afternoon, M-F. Also
included is a waterfall hike, a boat trip to the beautiful Isla Tortuga with
snorkeling, a Friday night fire show in Montezuma in which you can show off
your new moves in front of a crowd (optional but awesome!), transportation to
town and back each day (only 1 km, but up a steep hill), some built in down
time to hit the beach, canopy tour, go surfing, etc., and more.
Classes will be held on a hilltop overlooking Montezuma with
an inspirational ocean view.
About The Poi Instruction
The poi teachings covered will be best for those who can
play freely with the basics of poi already. Being comfortable with your
poi, and familiar with the 4 basic timing-and-directions (or "modes")
will help you get the most out of this poi retreat. There are lots of poi
tutorials online that cover the basics if you need to brush up. For
example, Play Poi has great beginner videos.
In one week, Zan will teach more about Poi than you thought
you wanted to know. We'll go beyond just tricks into all the aspects that
make you a well-rounded poi spinner. The curriculum will include, but
won't be limited to, the following:
Tricks
Stalls, wraps, bounces, flowers, antispin, pirouettes,
meltdowns, pendulums, one-point-fives, ellipses, triquetras, polyrhythms, CAPs
(continuous assembly patterns), inversions, inswings, isolations, tangles,
5-beat-weaves, hybrids, goofy flowers, floaters and cat eyes. Bring lots
of room in your memory! (or a notebook)
Techniques
Strong and detailed focus on movement and dance with
poi. How to do it, how to practice it, how to explore your own creative
flow.
Changing your poi length as you spin to access different
tricks and movement styles.
Spinning freely all around your body: Under-the-legs,
behind-the-back, and within the frames your arms can create.
Practice techniques: steps to teaching yourself any move,
and how to structure a practice session for maximum benefit.
Partner Poi! Partner weaves, sharing space, and sharing
patterns. No partner required, since you'll learn how to teach another
person once you get home.
Concepts
The 'Challenging, Easy, Effortless' framework, and how to
progress through it.
Placing petals, making mandalas, and designing your own
flowers.
Poi Performance: A distillation of hundreds of shows that
focuses on key points like posture, presentation, audience connection,
participation, eye contact, applause points, and more.
Accommodations
Accommodations for this workshop will not be in the standard
LEDS accommodations, but on a compound that includes several houses and
apartments with pool, jacuzzi, wireless internet access and BBQ. All
participants will be required to share a room with a maximum of 2 people per
room (we'll place you with someone of the same sex, if need be), A/C, full
kitchen and ocean view. If requested, we can place you in a room with a
friend or in a house with several friends (up to 4 total).

This poi workshop will not be compatible with LEDS Spanish,
Surfing, Yoga or Scuba Certification classes. For those who would like to
combine poi with these courses, regular poi sessions will continue apart from
the workshop. Longer stays may also be accommodated for participants who
would like to take the workshop and continue with LEDS classes either before or
